Recycled base gets a bad rap it does not deserve. Processed correctly, it performs, and it costs less. Here is the straight version.
Same strength, lower cost
Recycled base is crushed concrete and asphalt, processed on site to meet Caltrans Class II strength. For most driveways, pads and sub-base work, it compacts and carries load just like virgin aggregate, at a lower price per ton.
When to choose virgin
Some jobs call for a clean, certified virgin aggregate: certain spec work, or where a consistent, known gradation is required. When the spec says virgin Class 2, that is what you use. For everything else, recycled is usually the smarter buy.
The sustainability angle
Every ton of recycled base is a ton of demolition debris that did not go to a landfill, and a ton of quarry rock that stayed in the ground. Cheaper to dump, cheaper to buy, and better for the Valley.
