Drainage Behind a Retaining Wall: Do It Right

Most retaining walls that fail are not crushed by soil. They are pushed over by water that had nowhere to go.

Backfill with clean rock

Place clean, angular 3/4 inch drain rock directly behind the wall. It relieves the water pressure that builds against the back face after a storm.

Add a drain pipe

Run a perforated pipe at the base of the rock to daylight or a drain. The rock collects the water; the pipe carries it away.

Keep soil out

Separate the drain rock from the backfill soil with filter fabric so silt does not migrate in and clog the system over time.
